I think Chaps and Chief struggled with separating the “Official” narrative and the narrative that Oniell presents in Chaos. Much of the book is framed around the author disproving the narrative that is popularly believed and outlined in helter skelter. Although he doesn’t come to an official conclusion in an attempt not stray into the world of conspiracy theory, he presents a ton of evidence to prove that the official narrative isn’t quite complete. Oniell makes me think Manson may not have fully believed the entire heleter skeleter race war. I think he was definitely involved in the CIAs operation Chaos, but he discusses mansons personal potential connections within the Hollywood elite, connections to the owner of the house on cielo drive, connections to LSD researchers in San Francisco, and connections to almost all but confirmed CIA operatives

The rank thing is extremely common especially for retirement. With your senior enlisted and officer ranks there's requirements you have to meet to retain that rank in retirement, I was a captain for 3 years before medically retiring and was one month past the TIG requirement to retire as a Captain.

It’s clear that he inflated his service by using a rank that he didn’t earn by not completing the requirements and leaving to be a politician when his unit knew they were going to an official warning about deployment. His boss in the military did an interview on CNN and confirmed this. However, this won’t matter. Dems don’t care about his military service lol they just use it as a shield to say “hey we are military members too and we’re cool with banning ar15s”.
